Families and friends gather outside City Hall on Memorial Day for the 10:30 a.m. ceremonies that honor the many Veterans who served our country. The ceremony includes a featured speaker and performances by the high school and Kalamazoo bagpipe bands. The Memorial Day Parade then proceeds to Riverside Cemetery for Veterans’ services. The Masons of Peninsular Lodge #10 host this long-standing tradition. To obtain a parade registration form, call (269) 782.6306

    Jan Bloom to Bring in His Team of Four Sled Dogs

    Mid-Union Sled Haulers, known best for its promotion of sled dog racing as a fun, family activity, will be among the featured attractions of Dowagiac’s Ice Time Festival on Saturday, Feb. 2.

    Kris Soenen, festival chairman, said she is thrilled to bring this event back to Dowagiac, where most residents in southwestern Michigan have not experienced this winter sport.  “Mushing and sled hauling is a winter activity that is alive and well in Michigan, in both the upper and lower peninsulas, and locally at Fort Custer State Recreational Area, located between Kalamazoo and Battle Creek.”

    Celebrating 80 Years of Pageantry

    Eighty years of Dowagiac pageantry will be celebrated Jan. 12 as this year’s 11 contestants take the stage at Dowagiac Middle School.

    Pageant director Tracy Urbanski, office manager for Dowagiac’s Allergy, Asthma & Sinus Center, invites the public to join this year’s contestants as they step back in time to the roaring 1930s, when ballroom dances were the rage, and motion pictures depicted a time of elegance & sophistication.
