DOWAGIAC CREDIT UNION

Dowagiac Credit Union is a locally-operated and member-owned, non-profit financial institution. It provides services to anyone who lives or works in Dowagiac and the surrounding area, which includes Wayne, LaGrange, Silver Creek, Pokagon, Penn, Volinia, Marcellus, Decatur and Paw Paw townships in Cass and Van Buren counties.

Its products and services range from Savings and Checking Accounts to a Money Management Account, IRA and Term Share Accounts and even a Kid's Club. It also offers many types of loans to fit one's financial needs.

The credit union's Board of Directors is comprised of seven members who have been elected from the membership of the credit union. There is a three-member Supervisory Committee, which is appointed by the Board of Directors. Credit union volunteers give their time freely and receive no compensation.

The Dowagiac Credit Union was organized in September 1972 by the Sundstrand employees. In 1978 it became a Community Chartered Credit Union.

Housing to qualified residents is provided through the Dowagiac Housing Commission at Chestnut Towers and Parkside Townhouses.  Chestnut Towers features: independent living, handicapped accessibility, elevators, hot lunches provided by Cass County Council on Aging, an on-site library provided by the Dowagiac District Library, and an on-site laundry facility.

Parkside Townhouses feature spacious floor plans with two to three bedrooms, and a washer hook-up within each unit.

Rental vouchers, through the Section 8 Housing Program, are also available through the housing commission.

Peninsular Lodge No. 10, a Masonic fraternal organization, continues the long history of Freemasonry in Dowagiac. A Masonic lodge was established in this city in 1855 and has been active in the community since that time. The lodge is located in the Masonic Center in the heart of beautiful downtown Dowagiac, a location it has occupied since 1936.

Lodge business meetings are held the first Monday of each month at 7:30 p.m.

In addition to its fraternal activities, the lodge is active in the community in the following ways: organizing Dowagiac's annual Memorial Day Parade and remembrance; providing scholarships for high school and college students; co-sponsoring two annaul Red Cross blood drives and maintaining a nature trail at an elementary school.

     A new committee, Decorate Dowagiac, announced today their mission of building upon and enhancing the City of Dowagiac’s traditional holiday streetscape decorations.   

    “Our goal is to enhance the basics that are already in stock, and add some new features,” stated Melissa Gunn, committee Chairwoman. “Because commercial décor is expensive, this is going to be a group effort in fundraising in order to build a variety of decorations over a few years.”

    Gunn stated that the first goal is to embellish the City Christmas Tree that is set up in Beckwith Park annually.
